"New Applications for Marine Biopolymers"

Dr. Henry Lyons is a Fellow of the Institute of Chemistry of Ireland (F.I.C.I.) and of the Royal Society of Chemistry (C.Chem., F.R.S.C.). He was a science lecturer for almost 30 years in UCG, DIT and the Institute of Technology Tralee. Henry went on to be Head of Development in IT Tralee and Founding Director of Kerry Innovation Centre Ltd and the main driver for the establishment of the Tom Crean Business Incubation Centre located in the IT Tralee North Campus adjoining Kerry Technology Park. He was also the National Seaweed Forum Chairman from 1999 to 2002 and preformed as Technical Director of Brandon Products ltd, a marine biotechnology company from 2005 to 2017. Henry is now Scientific Director for Nutramara Ltd. where his vast academic and commercial experience is driving the company agenda.

Seaweeds contain some unique biopolymers which are not found in terrestrial plants and could be used to provide novel solutions to several of the global environmental, food and health problems. Recent advances in molecular biology and genomics have led to a better understanding of biochemical pathways in both plant and animal metabolic systems and marine oligosaccharides are likely to have important roles i plant protection and human health in the future.

Alginate is an extremely versatile but underutilised biopolymer which could be very widely used in the control of soil erosion , edible packaging and replacing synthetic plastics in the horticulture and food sectors.
