"Perspectives in Marine Active Cosmetic Ingredients: Macroalgae Culture as New opportunities"

Rémi Laville is a Chemical Engineer and has a PhD in Chemistry of Marine Natural Products. After two postdocs from 2008 to 2012, one in the Chemical Institute of Natural Substances in Paris on Marine Sponges Chemical Analysis and the other at the University of Nice-Sophia Antipolis on Aromatic and Medicinal Plant Valorization, he co-created and developed the R&D department on Natural Cosmetic and Perfume ingredients at Cosmo International Ingredients in Nice from 2012 to 2016. Since 2016 he is in charged of the Innovation & Development Team in Plant Biotechnology at Biotechmarine, subsidiary of SEPPIC.

With the aim to be constantly innovative within the continuously challenging cosmetic market, each opportunity that could be turned into a key point of innovation should be considered. Compared to terrestrial natural products, Marine natural products are still a young field to explore for new active ingredient discovery. As a Research center in sustainable Marine cosmetic active ingredient, our innovation linchpin dwells in the sustainable and innovative sourcing of our Macroalgae. From natural field or biotechnologically obtained, our natural starting material represents a tremendous spring of potentially active compounds to extract and design as cosmetic active ingredient [1]. Thus, the real point to wonder is whether the most innovative way to design Active ingredients concerns the algae species or the algal chemistry itself ? Such a question cannot be answered easily according to which side of the problem you are looking at.

The presentation will focus on the different ways macroalgae are dealt in our Innovation & Development Center: from natural sourcing by introducing the geographical variability as an opportunity [2] to biotechnology by presenting our technology Celebrity and the way we induce the algal metabolome in order to enhance the value of our biomass [3].

Key words: Macroalgae, Cosmetics Active, Biotechnology, Metabolic Induction.
