Shrikumar Suryanarayan is the Managing Director  and co-founder of Sea6 Energy Pvt. Ltd. Bangalore.  (www.sea6energy.com).  
The company was founded in 2010 in Chennai   by several alumni of IIT-Madras    and   is  focused on the development of technology for offshore biomass production and conversion to  a variety of bioproducts, including agricultural biostimulants  renewable fuels and chemicals. Shrikumar was formerly the President of Research and Development and Chief Scientific Advisor at Biocon Limited, Bangalore the largest life-science company in India for over 25 years.   He also served as the Chief Executive officer for the Translational Health Sciences Institute at the National Capital Region Biosciences Cluster, Government of India from 2009-2010. Shrikumar has B.Tech in Chemical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology  Madras ( IIT- Madras)  and a Masters in Biotechnology from  the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, He was conferred  the  “Distinguished Alumnus Award ” of the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras in 2009 and was chosen as “Entrepreneur of the year” by Biospectrum magazine in 2012. Shrikumar is also the current President  of  the Association of Biotechnology Led Enterprises  of India ( ABLE )  April 2018 - March 2021.


Presentation: 

Seaplants represent a unique, scalable and sustainable biomass source. Cultivation of this biomass does not require land, fresh irrigation water or fertilizers ( traditionally  limiting ingredients in agriculture). To  cultivate large quantities of  this biomass in a cost -effective manner, Sea6 Energy  has pioneered  new concepts and machinery  to make possible automated, large scale , industrial farming of selected sea plants which grow well in tropical ocean regions.  The bioconversion of these  tropical seaplants represents  a challenge because the chemical composition of these plants  is very different from that of  terrestrial plants . In addition, the high concentration  of salt present in the seaplant biomass is inhibitory  for conventional biotechnological conversion processes.  However, we have demonstrated that it is possible to access the biodiversity of the  marine ecosystem to develop solutions for this problem.  Based upon the  understanding of seaplant biology and chemistry and the  ability to access this biomass  at large scale,  Sea6 Energy sees the possibility of building a bio economy based upon carrying out agriculture on the oceans.. The company has already commercialized  a range of  seaplant based bio stimulant products  for agriculture which improves plant health, nutrition and yield. A second range of products for improving animal health in aquaculture is now  under development. The company has also demonstrated the technical feasibility of producing  renewable crude oil from these seaplants Sea6 Energy envisions a future where we can harness the potential of the oceans – to provide solutions in energy, agriculture and food  and renewable chemicals.
