Feskekörka, or the "Fish Church," is one of Gothenburg’s most beloved landmarks. Built in 1874 and inspired by Gothic church architecture, this unique building was designed by city architect Victor von Gegerfelt.
From the beginning, it served as an indoor fish market – a revolutionary idea at the time – offering fishermen and customers shelter from the harsh Nordic weather. Over the decades, Feskekörka became not just a marketplace, but a symbol of Gothenburg’s strong ties to the sea and its fishing heritage.
Today, the historic building has been carefully renovated and reimagined for modern times. While still honouring its roots in seafood, Feskekörka now also offers vibrant culinary experiences, events, and a meeting place for both locals and visitors. It continues to celebrate the rich flavours of the West Coast – from traditional dishes to contemporary creations – in a setting that blends history, culture, and innovation.
