How to make a Small Fortune in Seaweed
David Mackie, Director, Marine Biopolymers Ltd, The United Kingdom
About the speaker:
A Founding Director of Marine Biopolymers Ltd, or MBL and now known as a Seaweed Biorefining specialist. With a prior corporate career in Chemicals and Forest Products, he set up MBL (in 2010) to return Alginate manufacturing to Scotland. An eventful 15 years have followed and the company still looks to achieve this in a country with rich seaweed resource, albeit now as a Seaweed Biorefinery (and not just Alginate). If nothing else above all, he is a seaweed realist
Company info:

Marine Biopolymers (or MBL) is a Scottish SME with extensive know how and experience in Seaweed Biorefining, primarily with Brown seaweed species native to the N E Atlantic. It works with both Cultivated and Wild seaweeds, understanding both the possibles and impossibles of what can be done with seaweed, both technically and economically, and continues to hone its skills and offering to relevant markets and customers.
Presentation:
A perspective on the Seaweed Industry in Europe (Cultivators/harvesters/Processors), partly based on own experiences over 15 years – the highs and the lows – and also trying to look in from the outside. What works, what doesn’t and why or why not?
