Boosting Seaweed Valorisation in Morocco: State of the Art and Valorisation Potential

About the speaker: 

Mounia Lekrati is a Professor at the Higher Institute of Marine Fisheries (ISPM) – Agadir, specializing in the processing and valorization of fishery products. She holds a State Engineer degree in Food Industries from Agronomic and Veterinary Institute Hassan II, a Master’s in Biotechnologies for Sustainable Development from Aix-Marseille University, and a PhD on drying process optimization. Her research focuses on enhancing the oxidative stability of fishery products using aromatic and medicinal plants, optimizing industrial processes, and developing new product formulations. She has extensive experience in R&D and industrial process engineering and is actively engaged in projects on value chain development and sustainability assessment in collaboration with international organizations.

The Higher Institute of Marine Fisheries (ISPM) is a public institution under the Moroccan Ministry of Agriculture and Maritime Fisheries. It specializes in training senior professionals in marine fisheries, aquaculture, fish processing and valorization, QHSE management, and fisheries business administration. ISPM contributes to national development through high-level technical education, applied research, and expertise in the maritime fisheries sector.


Presentation: 

The presentation will explore the current production and exploitation of seaweeds in Morocco, highlighting their primary valorisation, particularly through agar production. Based on concrete research, it will discuss key valorisation pathways, the advantages and strategic relevance for Morocco, as well as the main challenges and bottlenecks. Finally, the presentation will propose strategic recommendations to boost seaweed valorisation and develop sustainable value chains in the country.
