The Missing Middle: Why Processing Will Decide the Future of Seaweed

Roy Henderson, CEO, Green Cell Technologies, United Kingdom

About the speaker:

Roy is a co-founder of Green Cell Technologies (GCT®) and the company’s CEO. A highly decorated retired combat officer with a successful naval career spanning 21 years, has elicited a curious mind, honed by an MBA and a drive to succeed. This has culminated in the creation and development of the ground-breaking technology – Dynamic Cellular Disruption and Disruptor Technology.

Roy has a refreshing reputation for forthrightness and tenacity. Everyone knows where they stand with him and with the company, which is appreciated by clients and colleagues alike. His can-do attitude, coupled with proven business acumen and a strong leaning towards problem solving, have also stood him and GCT® in good stead as the company has self-funded its way from innovation to global commercial success.

Company info:

Green Cell Technologies® (GCT®) is a processing technology company focused on unlocking the full value of biological materials through intelligent, zero-waste processing.

Using its proprietary Disruptor® and Dynamic Cellular Disruption® (DCD®) technologies, GCT enables the non-thermal, non-chemical breakdown of plant and marine biomass at a cellular level - releasing nutrients, bioactives, and functional compounds that are otherwise lost through conventional processing.

Originally developed through extensive work with seaweed and other resilient biomass, GCT’s technology allows producers to achieve higher yields, whole-spectrum utilisation, and multiple downstream value streams from the same harvested material - supporting environmental sustainability, commercial viability, and future-proof supply chains.

GCT works collaboratively with growers, processors, and downstream partners to strengthen the “missing middle” of the bioeconomy, ensuring that the promise of sustainable cultivation is matched by equally sustainable and efficient processing.

Presentation:

The seaweed industry has made remarkable progress in cultivation and market development - yet one critical link in the value chain remains largely overlooked: processing.  This talk challenges the assumption that better farming alone will deliver scale, sustainability, and profitability, and argues that the future of seaweed will be decided by how intelligently it is processed after harvest.  Using real data and practical examples, Green Cell Technologies will show how outdated processing methods are constraining yields and value, and how whole-biomass, zero-waste processing can turn seaweed from a promising crop into a truly future-ready industry.  Not a critique, but a call to rethink the middle - and unlock what seaweed can really deliver.
